Seasoning Your New Humidor

So you've just purchased your brand new humidor, you're excited to get it home and get your cigars in it and then you find out it needs to be 'seasoned'!

What is seasoning? Why is it necessary? Won't all the pepper and garlic affect the taste of your cigars?! Don't worry, we're here to explain it all to you.

Cigar humidors are built for one purpose; to maintain a certain level of humidity so that your cigars do not dry out. How ever, when your humidor first arrives, its only as humid as the rest of the air around. The purpose of seasoning a humidor is to bring the relative humidity (RH) up to around 70%.

How to season a humidor:

Firstly begin by removing all the humidifiers and digital hygrometers from the inside of your humidor if possible. You want it to be empty so you are able to reach all of the wooden surfaces.

Then take a brand new sponge, wet it with distilled water (so it is damp, not dripping wet!) and wipe down the entire inside of your humidor. You don't want to soak your humidor but you want to use enough water that you see the wood get a little darker in colour.

Now take a Crystal Clear Humidity Jar (or, in a pinch, a shot glass full of distilled water), switch on the hygrometer and leave both in your humidor, closed, for 24 hours.

After 24 hours open your humidor and check the hygrometer. It should be displaying close to 70%RH now. If not don't despair! Simply repeat the process and leave for another 24 hours.
